How Do You Grow Your Business? A Practical Guide for SME Owners

It’s the question every business owner asks at some point — usually when they’re busy, stressed, and not entirely sure why the effort they’re putting in isn’t translating into the results they expected.

So, how do you grow your business? Let’s give you a straight answer.

First: get clear on what growth means for you

Before you can plan for growth, you need to define it. Growth means different things to different business owners. For some, it’s about hitting a specific revenue target. For others, it’s about working fewer hours, building a team, or creating a business that can eventually run without them.

None of these are wrong. But they require very different strategies. The first step in growing your business is deciding exactly what you’re growing toward.

Diagnose before you prescribe

The second step is honest diagnosis. Most business owners jump straight to tactics — “I need to do more marketing”, “I should hire someone” — without first understanding what’s actually holding them back.

Ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I have a consistent flow of new leads, or do I rely on referrals and hope?
  • Do I know my conversion rate — what percentage of enquiries become clients?
  • Am I pricing at a level that reflects the value I deliver?
  • Do I know my numbers — profit margins, break-even, cost per acquisition?
  • Is the business dependent on me, or could it run without me for a week?

Honest answers to these questions will tell you more about where to focus than any tactic or trend.

The core growth levers

Ultimately, there are only a handful of ways to grow your business. Understanding these levers — and which ones to pull first — is the foundation of any solid growth strategy.

Get more clients

Increase the number of people who come into your world and decide to work with you. This is about lead generation — consistent, repeatable, and not reliant on whoever happened to recommend you this month.

Convert better

Improve the percentage of enquiries that become clients. Even moving from a 30% conversion rate to a 50% conversion rate, with the same number of leads, significantly increases your revenue. Your sales process is a growth lever most businesses never optimise.

Increase client value

Sell more to the clients you already have. Upsells, cross-sells, retainers, packages — there are almost always ways to increase the average spend per client without spending anything on new marketing.

Improve retention

Keep clients for longer. Reducing churn is one of the most powerful and underused growth strategies available to SME owners. A client who stays with you for three years instead of one is worth three times as much — without any additional acquisition cost.

Charge more

This is the one most business owners resist the most — and the one that often makes the biggest immediate impact. If you are undercharging (and most SME owners are), a pricing review can transform your margins without requiring a single new client.

Build a growth plan

Once you know your levers, you need a plan. A growth plan doesn’t need to be a lengthy document — but it does need to include:

  • A clear revenue target for the next 12 months
  • The specific activities that will drive new leads each week
  • Your sales process, mapped out step by step
  • A team plan — who you need and when
  • Your key financial benchmarks

Write it down. Review it weekly. Adjust it quarterly.

Get support

The biggest factor in how fast you grow your business is not your product, your market, or your timing. It’s you — your clarity, your consistency, and your willingness to be held accountable to the plan you’ve set.

That’s where business growth coaching comes in. Working with an experienced business coach gives you an outside perspective on what’s holding you back, a clear strategy for moving forward, and the accountability to actually follow through.

At GoSucceed®, we help ambitious SME owners in Brighton, Hove, and London do exactly that. Our Growth Programme is structured, proven, and built around your specific goals — not a generic framework that treats every business the same.
