Sales Process Design: Turn Conversations Into Clients Without the Hard Sell

If your sales rely on charm, good days, or chance, you are not alone. Most SME owners never got taught a clear way to guide a conversation from hello to signed deal. The result is stop-start revenue, awkward price chats, and follow-ups that fizzle out.

Here is the fix. A simple, human, six-step sales process that removes pressure, keeps you in control, and turns good conversations into great clients. No scripts to memorise. No spammy tactics. Just structure, clarity, and confidence you can use today.

This is the GoSucceed six-step model we coach across Brighton, London, Scotland, and the wider UK. It is practical, repeatable, and easy to teach your team so sales stop depending on you alone.

The six-step model you can use this week

GoSucceed teaches a straightforward flow you can run in any industry. Keep it visible in your CRM and calendar so every lead gets the same consistent experience.

1. Pre-discovery

Warm up the relationship before the first call. Send a short message with two lines: thanks for the enquiry, plus what to expect next. Share a 2-minute explainer or a one-page overview so prospects arrive informed. Include a simple intake form that asks for goal, timeline, and decision-makers. Set the agenda up front to reduce no-shows and price-only conversations.

2. Discovery and presentation

Run a 30 to 45 minute conversation. Spend two thirds on discovery, one third on presentation. Your aim is to understand the problem, impact, desired outcome, constraints, and buying process. Then show how you would approach it. Keep slides minimal, stories specific, and outcomes clear.

3. Value add

Send something helpful within 24 hours. A concise summary of goals, a checklist, or a relevant case study. This proves you listened and positions you as a partner, not a pusher.

4. Follow-up

Most deals are won here. Agree the next step on the call, then use a simple rhythm to stay consistent:

  • Day 0: recap email with agreed next step and date
  • Day 2: share the proposal and ask for questions
  • Day 7: nudge with a helpful tip or quick Loom video
  • Day 14: check-in, invite objections, offer a short call

Keep the tone friendly and direct. Vary the channel, use your CRM to set tasks, and always add value, not pressure.

5. Decision

Make it easy to say yes. Offer two or three clear options so the client chooses the right level, not whether to work with you at all. When you present price, use the phrase and pause: “The investment is £X per month, for Y months, which includes Z.” Then be silent. Let them process. Answer concerns. Clarify start date and onboarding.

6. Final close

If the prospect is 80 percent there but stuck, run a short final call. Revisit outcomes and risk of inaction. Confirm timing, access, and first milestones. Close gently with a question: “Are you happy to go ahead on Option B so we can start next Tuesday?”

Practical sales process templates you can swipe

Pre-discovery message

Thanks for getting in touch. To make our chat useful, here is a one-pager on how we help SMEs create a simple, repeatable sales process. Could you share your top goal for the next 90 days and who else should join the call?

Discovery opener

Before I share ideas, can I ask a few questions about what is working, what is not, and what success would look like three months from now?

Price phrasing

The investment is £X. That covers A, B, and C, with weekly support and a defined plan for the first 30 days.

Follow-up nudge

Quick check-in. I have held time next Thursday to kick off your onboarding if Option 2 works for you. Any final questions I can clear up today?

What makes an ideal sales process?

The ideal sales process is clear, human, and documented. It:

  • starts with the customer’s problem and desired outcome
  • uses consistent steps and timings so no lead is left behind
  • is value-led at every touchpoint
  • is trackable in your CRM so you can see bottlenecks and fix them
  • teaches your team how to sell without sounding salesy

Five versus seven stages, and how to keep it simple

You will see different models in books and courses. Commonly:

  • 5 stages: prospecting, discovery, presentation, handling objections, close
  • 7 steps: prospecting, preparation, approach, presentation, handling objections, closing, follow-up

Our six-step model blends the best parts and makes follow-up central because that is where most deals are won. Pick one model and commit to it. Consistency beats complexity.

How to increase sales quickly without pushing

Speed comes from focus and follow-through. This month:

  • Shorten response times. Reply to new leads within one hour wherever possible.
  • Tighten proposals. Keep to 2 pages, lead with outcomes, and include two options.
  • Increase pipeline touchpoints. Two extra useful touches per lead often double conversions.
  • Book decision calls. Send proposals during a meeting, not after. Talk it through live.
  • Clean your list. Re-engage warm contacts with a useful checklist and an invite to a short review.

If you want hands-on practice, explore our practical guidance in the Goldmine workshop series. It is built for real conversations and immediate application.

Q4 plays to convert year-end budgets

Q4 can be a gift if you guide buyers well.

  • Offer calendar certainty. Protect start dates for November and January to reduce risk for the client.
  • Create a fast-start plan. Map the first 30 days so stakeholders see quick wins this side of year-end.
  • Use budgeting windows. Ask directly, “Is there a 2026 budget we can align to if we invoice now and start in January?”
  • Simplify approvals. Provide a one-page summary for finance with deliverables, outcomes, and timeline.
  • Keep a festive follow-up cadence. People travel. Book decision calls early, confirm next steps in writing, and stick to your rhythm.

Accountability makes your sales process stick

A process only works if you use it every week. Block a 45 minute pipeline review on the same day and time. Log every touchpoint in your CRM. Celebrate small wins. If you want direct support and real accountability, book a sales process audit or join a Goldmine workshop to practise the conversations live.
