You Would Not DIY Your Accounts, So Why DIY Your Business Growth?

Most business owners would never dream of doing their own year-end accounts. Tax, payroll, compliance. Of course you use an accountant.

The same goes for legal work. Contracts, leases, shareholder agreements. You would not sit down with a blank document and hope for the best. You bring in a lawyer.

Yet when it comes to the part of the business that directly drives growth, many owners try to do it all themselves. Sales, marketing, pricing, lead generation. The things that decide whether the business grows or stalls.

We happily trust professionals with our accounts and our legal protection. We are far more hesitant to trust a professional with growth.

In this post we want to explore why that is, when it makes sense to bring in a business growth coach, and how a structured programme like GoSucceed® can help.

Why so many owners hesitate to hire a coach

There are some very human reasons why business owners hold back from working with a coach.

1. Coaching feels less tangible

With an accountant, you get a tax return. With a lawyer, you get a contract. The deliverable is clear. Business growth coaching can sound fuzzier. Words like mindset, clarity and accountability are important, but they can feel hard to measure. If you have seen vague promises or overhyped claims in the coaching world, it is understandable to be cautious.

2. Pride and identity

Most owners are proud of having built something themselves. They have left secure jobs, taken risks and backed their own judgement. Asking for help with growth can feel, wrongly, like admitting weakness.

3. Fear of being judged

There is often a quiet fear of being found out. What if the coach sees all the messy bits. The lack of systems, the inconsistent marketing, the numbers you have been avoiding.

4. Cost seen as optional

Accountants and lawyers are seen as essential. You feel you have to pay them. Growth support is often seen as optional, something you might invest in once things are going better. The result is that many owners stay stuck in the same patterns. Working hard, delivering well for clients, but not building the predictable growth they want.

Why a business growth coach is more like an accountant than you think

It helps to reframe what a good business growth coach actually does.

Think about your accountant. They understand the numbers and rules better than you do. They help you avoid costly mistakes. They free up your time to focus on what you do best.

A good business growth coach plays a similar role, but for growth. They bring a clear framework for sales and marketing, tested across many businesses. They offer an outside perspective that you cannot get from inside your own head. They provide structure and accountability, so important actions actually happen.

In other words, they are a specialist in growth, just as your accountant is a specialist in finance. You would not DIY your accounts. It is worth asking whether it still makes sense to DIY your growth.

Brilliant at what you do, but not trained in growth

Business owners are brilliant at what they do. That is why they gave up a secure job and set up in their field. But that brilliance does not automatically translate into brilliance in sales and marketing. And why should it. You have not been trained for that.

You might be an excellent lawyer, designer, consultant, engineer, tradesperson or accountant. Your technical skill is not in question. The challenge is that running and growing a business is a separate discipline. That is where a good business growth coach, and specifically a structured growth programme, can make a real difference.

When is the right time to work with a coach?

There is no single perfect moment, but there are some common signs that it might be time to get support. You might recognise yourself in one or more of these:

  • You are busy, but growth feels unpredictable
  • You rely heavily on word of mouth and would struggle to describe your sales process
  • You have ideas for marketing, but struggle to follow through consistently
  • You feel you are working very hard without seeing that effort reflected in revenue
  • You know your business could be bigger, but are not sure what to do next

Not sure where your business stands right now? Take two minutes to work through our free Business Growth Checklist and see exactly where the gaps are.

If any of these feel familiar, it is worth at least having a conversation. Not a commitment to sign up, simply a chance to explore whether there is a fit.

What a structured programme like GoSucceed® looks like

Not all business growth coaching is the same. Some is very open-ended. Some is focused on mindset only. Some is highly tactical.

The GoSucceed® Growth Programme is designed to give owner-led SMEs a clear, practical structure for six or twelve months. In simple terms, it looks like this:

  • A full day workshop to clarify your goals, define your ideal clients and design a realistic growth plan
  • Weekly 30-minute accountability calls to review actions, track leads and keep you focused
  • Monthly strategy reviews to step back, see what is working and adjust the plan

The primary measure of success is straightforward. Are you generating more of the right leads, more consistently.

Our role is to act as your part-time CEO. Not to tell you how to do your job. You are already brilliant at that. We are here to help you build and run a simple system that turns that brilliance into predictable growth.

A question to leave you with

You would not DIY your accounts or your legal work. You trust specialists with those parts of your business.

So it is worth asking yourself one simple question: is it time to stop DIYing your growth and bring in a specialist there too?

Start by taking our free Business Growth Checklist, then book a free 30-minute call with the GoSucceed® team. At worst, it will be a one-off distraction in a busy week. At best, it could be the start of a very different next six to twelve months for your business.
